Yoga prevents patients from having rotator cuff surgery.
Do you suffer from shoulder pain? Yoga may be just what you need to treat that rotator cuff injury. Read what Dr. Fishman is doing with his shoulder patients. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/02/health/02brody.html.
Is he a renegade or a miracle worker? It depends on who you ask, but if you ask me, the proof is in the pudding. A recent NY Times article featured the work of Dr. Loren Fishman, a physiatrist, or a medical doctor specializing in physical and rehabilitative medicine, and his success with patients with rotator cuff tears.
Dr. Fishman, a medical doctor who studied in India for 3 years before going onto medical school, is bridging the gap between what is considered mainstream and alternative. He is well known for his use of yoga poses to remedy conditions such as shoulder injuries, arthritis, osteoporosis, and scoliosis. In this particular case, a yoga remedy that only takes 30 seconds to perform per treatment has saved 90% of the 700 patient treated from having rotator cuff surgery.
The yoga treatment had staying power. All of the yoga-treated patients maintained their initial relief for as long as they were studied (up to 8 years) and no new tears occurred. This is big news! The International Conference on Yoga for Health and Transformation thought so too, awarding Dr. Fishman a prize this year.
This article is inspiring for practitioners, like myself, who strive to integrate techniques in which the patient is given tools to heal themselves.
If you would like to read the article in its entirety, you can find it at: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/02/health/02brody.html. I would also like to share the fact that my 90 year old Nana called me to tell me about this article. She also happens to have walked 9 miles on her 90th birthday. Be inspired!!
