fertilityThe following is a case study from my acupuncture practice on fertility. Note:  Although the events described in the following case study are factual, the names have been changed for the purpose of patient confidentiality.  Any similarities to actual individuals is purely coincidental.
Annie, 41 year old female, came in with complaints of hot flashes.  Originally thought to be caused by high stressed situations at work.  In the last two month, hot flashes have been coming on without any associations with work or stress.  Several instances occured while on holiday with her husband to Lake Tahoe on a ski trip.

Last month, she had an appointment to see her gynocologist who ran blood test panel and found lowered estrogen hormone level and higher FSH and LS hormone levels.  Her gynocologiest determined that she may be nearing peri-menopause or possibly premature ovarian failure (POF).  Annie was destressed as she had hopes of still conceiving children.

When asked the reason for waiting until this point in her life to conceive, Annie responded that she thought she always had time later.  First, she wanted to build her career in the high paced, high stressed field of business finance.  Then she met her husband, who she'd been married to for 8 years at that point.  She wanted to enjoy building a life and relationship with him.  Then they bought a fixer upper home in a good neighborhood in San Francisco, so they wanted to get most of the renovation work handled or completed before conceiving.

They were not quite done with the house, but they have been trying to conceive for the last 6 months and have been unsuccessful.  And her hot flashes prompted her to seek other alternatives, hence her visit to my office.

After 5 months of treatment and herbal therapy, her hot flashes were significantly reduced.  They occurred once or maybe twice a week.  And when she did experience a hot flash, they last about 40 seconds or less.  Her pulses and tongue readings showed marked improvement and she had committed to several lifestyle changes to dramatically reduce her stress level.  So although she and her husband were still interested in having children, she wasn't set on conceiving her own biological children.  So they started adoption procedures.

Twelve months later, she gave birth to her daughter Daniella following the adoption of her older daughter Sophie two months earlier.  No matter what age or physical condition the new mother is in, I strongly urge all my new mothers to be deligent with their post-partum and birth recovery treatments with me.  Annie was very deligent and consistent with her treatment protocol, both before and after the birth of her children.  So it wasn't surprising that she regained her strength and energy quickly.

Even with nursing and raising what basically are twin daughters, she was at her full capacity within six months post-partum.  She was even considering picking up with work a few hours a week.  For this reason, I cautioned Annie that conception of more children can occur very easily at this point and she should be mindful of utilizing birth control.  But like many new mommies that have difficulty conceiving the first time, they're skeptical that conception could come so easily or quickly the next time around.

Approximately ten months following this conversation, Annie gave birth...to twins!  Michael and Andrew were born 2 minutes apart and became lively and rambunctious additions to their growing family.  Annie and her husband found themselves amazed and blessed by their good fortune.

Between the age of 41 to 45, Annie went from possible infertility to having four very young children--all under the age of three.  Her life had definitely changed from being polished and coiffed, living a high stressed and fast paced lifestyle to being bed-raggled, stained-shirt wearing, mostly stay-at-home mom with the occassional work contract.  And she loved every minute of it.
