Case of the week. How an anti-inflammatory diet helped a patient get his life back. We have been seeing this patient for multiple musculoskeletal complaints including back pain, knee pain, wrist pain among others. He is a former nationally ranked athlete who had been unable to compete in his sport that he loved for the last ten years. His doctor told him that he had arthritis and that there was nothing that he could do outside of taking anti-inflammatory medications.
The patient agreed to have a clinical nutritional evaluation to see if what he was eating or wasn't eating was contributing to his arthritis. As it turns out, the patient was consuming a high amount of refined sugar which he eliminated among other things like gluten and dairy. After several weeks of purging his system of these substances, the patient noted that his joints started to feel better. In fact, he lost twelve pounds and has more energy (and better libido) than he had fifteen years ago.
In this case, this patients' diet was contributing to a systemic inflammatory condition and was exacerbating his osteoarthritis. Now that he has seen the powerful effects of eating an anti-inflammatory diet, he is a new man......literally! He has returned to playing the sport that his doctor told him he had to give up ten years ago.
